ABOUT

Secure Unit

Secure Unit aren’t just your average Blues/Rock outfit.

They’re a vastly experienced group of musicians that draw on a wealth of shared tastes and musical genres.  From Blues, Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Rock and Soul.  The four band members also comprise of 4/5ths of the re-formed legendary 70’s prog rock band Necromandus.  Secure Unit provides the chance to break free from the conventions of genre and blend all of their respective influences into a sound that is unmistakably their own.

Dean Newton – Guitar and Vocals

A graduate of the London College of Music, Dean has studied under some of the most highly respected guitarists in the world.  He is an in-demand West Cumbrian based musician and guitar teacher who’s playing style is very modern yet rooted in the traditions of Jazz and Blues.  Never one to stand still, he is always seeking out new sounds and concepts to find that elusive “cutting edge”.  Dean is also an endorsed artist for Tokai Guitars.

Bass – Paul Spedding

Paul got his calling to the bass after a spell living in the USA listening to the Funk and Soul of the late 70’s. On returning to the UK he worked his way through the styles of Mod, Reggae, Rock, Prog, Folk, Pop, Jazz and Blues.  He worked in a number of bands gigging the Merseyside and West Lancs areas during the 80’s before retiring due to work commitments.  After hearing the great bands and players of North Lancashire and Cumbria he got the bug again and started playing with The Gerry Gillard Band, The White Room and Tabularaza, whilst also sitting in with bands such as The Holborn Hillbillies and Sidetrack.  He now plays full time with Prog rock band Necromandus and Blues Rock band Secure Unit.

John Marcangelo – Keyboards

John was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria but spent his early years in New York.  On his return to the UK he attended St. Beghs School in Whitehaven, Cumbria, where he was a classmate of Frank Hall.  After attending Leeds College of Music he moved to London working with the composer Cornelius Cardew.  He later formed the band Violinski with Mik Kaminski of E.L.O making the UK Top Twenty with his composition “Clog Dance”.  John has writing and performing credits on many projects/sessions as diverse as TV commercials and Allan Holdsworth.

Frank Hall – Drums

Frank is a Cumbrian drumming legend, with a list of musical projects that would rival anyone.  Most notably, he was an original founding member of Necromandus, when they we’re touring with Black Sabbath.  He later joined Ozzy Osbourne’s Blizzard of Oz.  Amongst the many admirers of Frank’s drumming style was none other than Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham who mentions this in an autobiography.
